![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Under the Sea of Stars (Seanan McGuire): This story is another example of McGuire’s fascination with portal fantasies. As things went on, it seemed this was merely human colonization on a galactic scale. At first I thought it was odd that the aliens had what seemed to be African names. Vade Retro Satana (Maurice Broaddus): Broaddus gives us a SF classic in that this story is using the future to teach us our past. It’s not interested in the why or the details of the collapse refreshing. It’s almost entirely about the people involved. Mouths (Liz Huerta): this story is a very interesting take on the climate dystopia. Not a problem for me, I’m a huge fan of those old stories like what Asimov used to write. Remaking History (Kim Stanley Robinson): this has a real feel of a golden age science fiction short story: a bunch of characters mostly having a philosophical discussion with a minimum of action or plot. I was especially happy to find out that I started out my Lightspeed magazine subscription with this issue because for the next 5 issues they had stories by Ashok K Banker that all take place in the same universe and I loved the story in this issue. This was an awesome issue of Lightspeed magazine where I really enjoyed every story. Lightspeed Magazine, Issue 103, December 2018 by John Joseph Adams ![]()

Sanditon and other stories7/3/2023 ![]() The special joy of this collection lies in Austen’s juvenilia–tiny novels, the enchantingly funny Lady Susan’s subtle, single-minded, and ruthless pursuit of power makes the reader regret that Austen never again wrote a novel with a scheming widow for its heroine. Is a miniature masterpiece, featuring Austen’s only villainous protagonist. , begun in 1804 but never completed, tells the story of a young woman who was raised by a rich aunt and who finds herself shipped back to the comparative poverty and social clumsiness of her own family. Its subject matter astonishes: here is Austen observing the birth pangs of the culture of commerce, as her country-bred heroine, a foolish baronet, a family of hypochondriacs, and a mysterious West Indian heiress collide against the background hum of real-estate development at a seaside resort. ![]() Might have been Austen’s greatest novel had she lived to finish it. ![]() Readers of Jane Austen’s six great novels are left hungering for more, and more there is: the marvelous unpublished manuscripts she left behind, collected here. ![]()
